New Online Course: Introduction to Physiology for Sim Techs

Are you a simulation technology specialist with a background in IT/AV or technology and looking to quickly learn how and why the body works the way it does? annual subscribers can now enroll in this affordable 2-hour online course taught by Dr. Kim Baily, PhD, RN and get up to speed with all things Physiology!

The human body may be viewed as a system with constantly changing inputs and outputs. When existing systems fail to maintain body functions within normal limits, clinical signs and symptoms appear and the patient may become ill. Healthcare professionals (HCPs) are trained to recognize, interpret and respond to these changes in a way that helps bring the system back into balance.

Simulation technologists manipulate the simulation environment to mimic clinical situations. In so doing, sim techs provide an opportunity for HCPs to practice and improve their skills in a supportive and safe learning environment. This course is designed as a basic review of physiology for sim techs with little or no medical background.

Instructor: Kim Baily, RN, PhD
Bio: Dr. Kim Baily, MSN, PhD, RN, CNE, began her career in healthcare and ignited a lifelong love of physiology, when she earned her PhD researching cystic fibrosis at St. George’s Hospital Medical School in London, England. She then moved to Miami, Florida, to take on a post-doctorate fellowship studying lung physiology. Realizing that nursing was a perfect career for her, she later completed a fast track BSN at Samuel Merritt College, where she graduated summa cum laude and received the prestigious Florence Nightingale Award.

After excelling in her work as an ICU nurse, Dr. Baily turned to education. She has taught everything from medical surgical nursing to critical care, gerontology, nursing process, pharmacology and, of course, physiology. With more than 20 years of experience as an educator, Professor Baily is a master teacher. She obtained national certification as a Nurse Educator in 2012. She has chaired many faculty committees, and ultimately served for several years as Director of Nursing at El Camino College.

One day, when Dr. Baily was sorting out a storeroom of old equipment, she came across someone unexpected, someone that would change her life and alter the course of her career. That someone was SimMan. Dr. Baily became fascinated by simulation and its potential to increase student learning and improve patient care.

Dr. Baily quickly became a simulation expert and has since planned, overseen, coordinated, and implemented two new simulation facilities/programs. Most recently, she served as the Sim Coordinator at Pasadena City College (PCC), where she oversaw the reconstruction/rebuilding of a new simulation center of her own design. At PCC, Professor Baily was also responsible for faculty education and the implementation of simulation throughout the PCC School of Healthcare Sciences.

Dr. Baily continues to teach nursing and simulation-related courses in a variety of forums, such as on site simulation debriefing workshops and online courses from SimGhosts. She serves as a consultant for emerging simulation programs and Chairs the Southern California Simulation Collaborative, which supports healthcare professionals working in simulation in both hospitals and academic institutions throughout Southern California.
