New Self-Paced Healthcare Course Available - Introduction to Cardiac Rhythms

Introduction to Cardiac Rhythms

Course information

Course Length: 2 hours

Course Fee: $75

Format: Self-guided

Description: The Cardiac Rhythms course reviews the basic physiology of the cardiovascular system. The course opens with a discussion of myocardial cell function and how electrical signals are generated within the myocardium. The pathway of electrical conduction is traced through the chambers of the heart and is related to the contraction of the chambers. Mechanisms that control cardiac function are reviewed. The theory behind 12 lead Electrocardiography is outlined. Basic cardiac rhythms analysis is discussed. Normal sinus rhythm, atrial dysrthymias, heart blocks and ventricular dysrthymias are reviewed. The treatment of the dysrthymias is outlined. The pathophysiology, assessment and basic treatment of myocardial infarct (heart attack) is discussed.

Course Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the electrical conduction through the heart.
  • List the main factors that control the heart.
  • Describe the major components of the cardiac cycle Identify basic cardiac dysrhythmias.
  • Describe the pathophysiology of myocardial infarction.
  • Describe the assessment of a patient with a suspected myocardial infarction.

Instructor: Kim Baily, RN, PhD

Biography: Dr Kim Baily, MSN, PhD, RN, CNE, began her career in healthcare and ignited a lifelong love of physiology, when she earned her PhD researching cystic fibrosis at St George's Hospital Medical School in London, England. She then moved to Miami, Florida, to take on a post-doctorate fellowship studying lung physiology. Realizing that nursing was a perfect career for her, she later completed a fast track BSN at Samuel Merritt College, where she graduated summa cum laude and received the prestigious Florence Nightingale Award.

After excelling in her work as an ICU nurse, Dr Baily turned to education. She has taught everything from medical-surgical nursing to critical care, gerontology, nursing process, pharmacology and, of course, physiology. With more than 20 years of experience as an educator, Dr. Baily is a master teacher. She obtained national certification as a Nurse Educator in 2012. She has chaired many faculty committees, and ultimately served for several years as Director of Nursing at El Camino College.

One day, when Dr. Baily was sorting out a storeroom of old equipment, she came across someone unexpected, someone that would change her life and alter the course of her career. That someone was SimMan. Dr. Baily became fascinated by simulation and its potential to increase student learning and improve patient care.

Dr. Baily quickly became a simulation expert and has since planned, overseen, coordinated and implemented two new simulation facilities/programs. Most recently, she served as the Sim Coordinator at Pasadena City College where she oversaw the reconstruction/building of a new simulation center of her own design. At PCC Professor Baily was also responsible for faculty education and the implementation of simulation throughout the PCC School of Healthcare Sciences.

Dr. Baily continues to teach nursing and simulation related courses in a variety of forums, such as on site simulation debriefing workshops and online courses from SimGHOSTS. She serves as a consultant for emerging simulation programs and Chairs the Southern California Simulation Collaborative which supports healthcare professionals working in simulation in both hospitals and academic institutions throughout Southern California. members can register for this course HERE!
