Simulation Champion Award February 2018
The SimGHOSTS Simulation Champion Award nomination for February 2018 has been awarded to Russell Metcalfe-Smith, Simulation Center Manager at Cedars-Sinai Women’s Guild Simulation Center.
Russell was nominated by a peer from the healthcare simulation technology community who had the following comments:
“Russell comes to mind first when I think of the term 'Sim Champion'. Russell embodies what this award symbolizes. Russell consistently serves as an example to what should be the expectations of a major simulation innovator. He serves as a teacher, a mentor, and a visionary for the future of healthcare simulation.”
“Russell has been instrumental in developing one of the most state of the art simulation programs in the country. He has been an assessor with SSH, a consultant on simulation center development and a strong advocate for high fidelity, full immersion simulation and the related technology necessary. Russell has integrated the entire center, including hospital equipment to all be controlled from a single station. Russell has been instrumental in the development of multiple training modalities across the spectrum related to training opportunities for the medical center's "lift team," all the way to simulation for novel procedures related to pediatric, cardio-thoracic surgery.”
When asked to describe a solution or invention that Russell contributed to, his peer described Russell coordinating the manufacture and implementation of a specialized pediatric simulator with a heart that Russell had 3D printed to reproduce a congenital heart defect to be used in the training of the congenital heart team. The peer added that “Russell is consistently seeking new ways, means and methods to employ the center's assets for improving patient health, outcomes and safety.”
When notified of his Award, Russell humbly acknowledged that his success was a direct result of the "excellent team" at Cedars Sinai who support his passion for innovation in simulation.
SimGHOSTS agree that Russell is a worthy recipient of the Simulation Champion Award and congratulate Russell on his dedication to improving both learner and patient outcomes through innovative use of simulation technology.
Russell will receive an Award Certificate and a 3 month SimGHOSTS subscription for his nomination. Each July, voting for the Simulation Champion Trophy is opened featuring the monthly award winners from the previous 12 months. The winner is announced at our USA event in August and receives a trophy and a free registration to a SimGHOSTS event of their choice the following year.
