SimGHOSTS are excited to announce that the Keynote Speaker for our 2018 Australia event is patient safety expert PROFESSOR BILL RUNCIMAN BSc (Med), MBCH, FANZCA, FJFICM, FRCA, HKCA, PhD.
In his Keynote Presentation, Professor Runciman will propose a framework for integration of patient safety efforts internationally and discuss the role that simulation could play.
Professor Runciman is an international leader in patient safety and quality research. He was the Foundation Professor of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at the University of Adelaide and Head of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at Royal Adelaide Hospital from 1988 to 2007, when he retired from clinical practice to focus on full time patient safety research.
In 1987 Professor Runciman was instrumental in the formation of the Australian Patient Safety Foundation and has been president since its inception in 1988.
A publication record of over 200 papers and chapters is highlighted by being a lead investigator in the Medical Journal of Australia's most cited paper, being the most cited author in the history of the journal "Anaesthesia and Intensive Care", and career citations totalling over 14000.

The Robert Orton Medal - the highest honour awarded by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists
Pugh Award from the Australian Society of Anaesthetists for outstanding contribution to the advancement of the science of anaesthesia, intensive care and related disciplines
Chairman of the Safety and Quality of Practice Committee of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (1992-2000)
A key role in development of the International Patient Safety Classification for the World Alliance for Patient Safety of the World Health Organization
