Simulation Champion Award June 2018



Congratulations to the SimGHOSTS Simulation Champion for June: Lise Kinahan, Skills and Simulation Lab Coordinator at MassBay Community College in Framingham, Massachusets.


Lise was described as a unicorn by a colleague, and another colleague describes her as an invaluable asset to their program. What is it about Lise that earns this sort of praise? She is a seasoned field clinician, an accomplished artist and a simulation specialist. The application of three skill sets together with her commitment to the success of both students and the simulation program at MassBay make Lise worthy of being awarded Simulation Champion for June 2018.

Lise uses her background as a paramedic to support simulation for the entire division of Health Sciences which includes EMT, Paramedicine, ADN, LPN, Radiologic Technology, Surgical Technology, CNA, and Central Processing. Her artistic skills are applied to improve realism of both patients and environments and her planning and organizing skills are equally as impressive. Each semester Lise coordinates a disaster drill exercise. Most recently it was a simulated car crash into baseball field scenario that involved 80 people including EMT, Paramedicine and Health Science students, college police, the fire department, EMS agency, campus community members and local high school students. After months of planning the disaster drill went off without a hitch and students had a valuable opportunity to experience how difficult it can be to communicate and operate in chaotic scenes.

Since stepping into the role of Skills and Simulation Lab Coordinator Lise has expanded simulation offerings to feature increased use of moulage, standardized patients, and augmented and virtual reality. Her passion for simulation sees her continually researching and implementing new simulation methods, equipment and scenarios that can be used to benefit the students.  Lise manages all of the health sciences labs, is planning for a new campus, teaches evening classes as an adjunct professor and is preparing for accreditation of the simulation center. Even with this workload Lise’s performance exceeds expectations as she was instrumental in securing a $500,000 grant to support and advance simulation in the Health Sciences division at MassBay.

MassBay had this to say when informed of Lise's nomination:

Lise, our Simulation and Skills Labs Coordinator, has brought a level of engagement, realism and creativity to our Simulation Services that we did not have previously.  Her background in Paramedicine gives her insight into patient care at its most challenging times, and allows her to work with faculty as they prepare health scenarios that mimic real life.  Lise's amazing enthusiasm and positivity has created avenues for high school students, as well as Psychology majors, Early Childhood and Human Services students to bring their textbooks to life.  As opposed to simply reading about the LifeSpan, Lise helps these students experience it in the Simulation Lab.  Lise has engaged the Framingham community in Simulation by inviting the area Fire Stations, Police, high schools, and auto junk yards to participate in relevant drills with our EMS and Allied Health students.  Our students graduate with additional skill sets confidence and experience because they have been engaged in simulation thoughtfully crafted by Lise Kinahan. 

Lise will receive an Award Certificate and a 3 month SimGHOSTS subscription for his nomination. Each July, voting for the Simulation Champion Trophy is opened featuring the monthly award winners from the previous 12 months. The winner is announced at our USA event in August and receives a trophy and a free registration to a SimGHOSTS event of their choice the following year.
