David was nominated by a member of the simulation technology community who admires David’s passion for improving healthcare simulation. A colleague supported the nomination, saying that David’s technical support has significantly enhanced their simulation program.

A quick Google search will show you that David is a regular on industry forums and social media, offering advice, sharing his expertise and encouraging others. David regularly conducts experiments comparing the effectiveness of a range of products for different applications or demands placed on them in a simulation laboratory, publishing his progress and results online to share with the community. A significant amount of this work is done in his own time showing his dedication to the healthcare simulation technology profession and his fellow community members.

David’s achievements at Wright State University include:

Engineering a modification to an arterial line trainer which improved consistency of performance in learners and reduced set-up time by 80%.

Developing a suture pad form that allows suture pads to be produced in-house at a greatly reduced cost.

Coordinating and implementing a major upgrade to his lab’s AV system including being flexible with his work hours to allow the upgrade to be completed in record time and without disruption to the busy simulation schedule.

In conjunction with a colleague, repairing and maintaining older simulation equipment extending its lifespan by 4-5 years beyond anticipated.

David is best known for his moulage expertise. He has presented moulage workshops at several conferences, and will be presenting at the upcoming IMSH 2019 conference in San Antonio. At SimGHOSTS 2018 event he used the event app to create a moulage special interest group which quickly gained a strong following before the event had even started. When he realized that there were attendees at the event that were not able to attend the fully booked moulage workshops, he packed some supplies and ran an impromptu ‘pop up’ workshop for them during a lunch break. Such are David’s moulage skills that in 2016 he started a small business and sells his creations to others through his Simulation Tek website.

The SimGHOSTS team were also impressed with David’s dedication to supporting both the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine program and the healthcare simulation technology profession. David will receive an Award Certificate and a 3 month SimGHOSTS subscription for his nomination. Each July, voting for the Simulation Champion Trophy is opened featuring the monthly award winners from the previous 12 months. The winner is announced at our USA event in August and receives a trophy and a free registration to a SimGHOSTS event of their choice the following year.
