Simulation Champion Award Winner March 2019
Congratulations to the SimGHOSTS Simulation Champion for March 2019 - Zach Eastwood, Simulation Technology Specialist at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Washington.
Zach was nominated for this award by a peer who acknowledged Zach’s generous contributions to both his workplace and the wider healthcare simulation community. Another peer said that Zach inspires her to make the extra effort to turn good into great. All three individuals who nominated Zach noted that he is always willing to help others in any way that he can and consistently performs beyond expectations.
Zach entered the world of healthcare simulation in 2014 after completing a BS in Digital Art and Graphic Design. He put those skills to use by reproducing realistic medicine labels for every medicine used in the simulation program. Zach’s medication labels had a very important addition - a prominent red stripe at the top stating SIMULATION: Not For Patient Use. Just as with the real medications, these are barcode compatible with simulated patient electronic health records. Zach’s keen eye for design spotted similarities between two variations of a real medication that if wrongly administered could lead to a serious error. He reported this to the hospital pharmacy so that the labelling of the two medications could be improved and the likelihood of error reduced.
Zach’s creativity has extended to production of task trainers. Using 3D printing and different types of silicones he is able to produce task trainers based on descriptions and feature requests from educators. These include a neonatal ostomy simulator and IV insertion task trainers, and a skin vest for simulated patients to provide skin-to-skin care of a premature infant. If that weren’t enough, Zach also rocks some impressive IT skills. At the Swedish Simulation Center patient monitors are wall mounted and needed the IPv4 settings changed whenever the simulator in the room was changed. Zach created a nutshell script that would change the settings, connect the manikin and launch the patient monitor program all with the push of one button.
Perhaps Zach’s most redeeming quality is his generosity. Zach has shared his solutions with others by preparing and distributing how-to guides and presenting at 6 major simulation events, taken on higher duties for colleagues who are on extended leave, volunteers as Director of Marketing on the Pacific Northwest Healthcare Simulation Collaborative Board of Directors, and is a member of the Advisory Board for a Simulation Operations Specialist Associates Degree Program. All of this while also completing a Masters in Business Administration!
Zach’s nomination stood out to the SimGHOSTS team and was unanimously accepted as the Simulation Champion award winner for March.
Zach will receive an Award Certificate and a 3 month SimGHOSTS subscription for his nomination. Each July, voting for the Simulation Champion Trophy is opened featuring the monthly award winners from the previous 12 months. The winner is announced at our USA event in August and receives a trophy and a free registration to a SimGHOSTS event of their choice the following year.
