SimGHOSTS 2019 USA at FIU Opens to Record Breaking Numbers
Yesterday SimGHOSTS 2019 USA opened to yet another year of record breaking numbers of attendees and vendors from around the world who share a passion for medical simulation technology. Hosted by the Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences' Simulation Teaching and Research Center at Florida International University. SimGHOSTS non-profit 501(c)3 President Ferooz Sekandarpoor welcome the 270+ attendees and vendors to four exciting days of specialized training sessions, networking opportunities, and technology demonstrations.
Dr. Ora Strickland, Dean & Professor of the FIU Nursing and Health Sciences College, started the conference by inviting the international audience to learn more about the STAR Center, recognizing her teams passion, support and belief in the power of simulation. She delighted that the beauty of bringing us all together at the event is that it provided the opportunity to share with one another the secrets of success in clinical simulation.
Following that, SimGHOSTS President Ferooz Sekandarpoor thanks Dr. Strickland, Henry Henao and the STAR Operations Team, and the vendor community which supports the SimGHOSTS community. He was proud to announce that SimGHOSTS has signed more than 10 international affiliations with organizations such as SSiH, INACSL, ASPiH, PASSH, IPSS, Simulation Australia, ASPE, SimONE, HiMSS, Patient Safety Movement as well as collaborated with Society in Europe for Simulation Applied to Medicine (SESAM).
Level 3 Healthcare Platinum Sponsor Keynote Address
Yesterday Professor John Rizvi PA, Board Certified Patent Attorney and Adjunct Professor of Law provided the Level 3 Healthcare Keynote presentation entitled “How to Accelerate Opportunity by Patenting Your Simulation Innovations”. Scott Atkinson, Lead Simulation Operations Technology Specialist at Level 3 Healthcare, invited John to the stage — cautioning the audience about the perils of misunderstanding patent knowledge sharing a heartbreaking story of losing his rights to a simulator he spent 4 years developing. John’s presentation covered the need to fight for our rights to the technological IP we create.
Gold Sponsor Plenaries Show the Benefits of Supporting Sim Techs
EMS Plenary on Serious Games, VR, AR Yesterday the Education Management Solutions (EMS) SimulationIQ Plenary by Dr. Todd P Chang, MD MAcM, Divisional Director for Research & Scholarship for the Division of Emergency Medicine at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and the Associate Medical Director for the CHLA Simulation Center, who covered practical and academic considerations for integrating serious games, VR, and AR to the simulation center.
Laerdal Medical sponsored this morning's plenary address “Simulation Technologists: The Foundation for Success” Presented By Professor Henry Henao Henry Henao MSN, ARNP, FNP-BC, CHSE, Director of the events host, the Simulation Teaching and Research Center at the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences at FIU.
Later this afternoon, MedVision sponsored the plenary address by Kristina Artiles MBA, MSN, RN, CHSOS, Assistant Dean of Student Learning at Chamberlain College of Nursing, Miramar, who shared her story of journey from Support Specialist at the STAR Center to Manager at Chamberlain. Her talk is entitled “The Simulation Technology Specialist as a Stakeholder in Patient Outcomes”. In an era where the rate of medical errors is on the rise, it is important to appreciate how simulation technology specialists have a stake in promoting positive patient outcomes. Understanding and utilizing quality improvement strategies in the learning environment can assist the simulation program with providing the most effective learner experiences.
