The "CricKids" Show Off Their Winning SG17USA EMS Hackathon Project
At SimGHOSTS 2017 USA, EMS SimulationIQ sponsored an industry first: The first organizational HACKATHON! During the eight hour pre-conference workshop, three teams competed to build a project which solved an industry wide issue.
3D printers, Arduino computers, moulage materials, computers, and other technology systems were utilized by the groups who each created unique products addressing key issues within healthcare simulation. Industry representatives from EMS, SimGHOSTS leadership, 3D printer experts, clinical educators, programming developers, biomed engineers, and technology experts came together in a unique way. SimGHOSTS 2017 USA was hosted by Dr. Amar Patel and his amazing team at the WakeMed Center for Innovative Learning in Raleigh North Carolina -- which brought together 200 simulation champions and 17 vendors from around the world for 4 days of hands-on training in healthcare simulation technology operations.
Over the past several years, the international healthcare simulation community has overwhelmingly requested that SimGHOSTS put on this innovative development workshop to find and solve industry challenges. Industry experts led teams covering key domains healthcare, simulation, business, hardware manufacturing, software development, and moulage in identifying simulation industry wide challenges and help to “HACK” an innovative solution! David Escobar was instrumental in helping to put together and manage the event process. Andy Taylor, President of Raleigh's biomed startup incubator "Medical Innovators Collaborative" or MEDIC, was also in attendance to support the event.

What is a Hackathon? A hackathon is a design sprint-like event in which computer programmers and others involved in project development, including graphic designers, interface designers, project managers, and subject-matter-experts, collaborate intensively on a projects. Some hackathons are intended simply for educational or social purposes, although in many cases the goal is to create usable object. Hackathons can last many days in a row -- and its how Twitter was invented!

Always interested in supporting the innovation of healthcare simulation, the SimulationIQ team were very excited to support an industry first, a hackathon by a simulation organization. As a Gold Sponsor of the SimGHOSTS 2017 USA event, SimulationIQ supported the event and the organization in a big way -- by providing the resources necessary to create the event in terms of equipment, team members and supplies. At the conclusion of the event, Lynn Welch from SimulationIQ helped to judge the three entries to determine the winner, alongside David Escobar from Level 3 Healthcare, Lance Baily Founder of SimGHOSTS, Andy Taylor, President of MEDIC, and Aaron Byrd from WakeMed.

Their project included a 3d printed neck, springs, and moulage bubblewrap which acted as a prototype model for affordable cricothyrotomy training, which parts costing less than $50. Each winner received an Arduino set and a free annual subscription to SimGHOSTS.org!
